How to Cope with Depression_ Some Self-help Tips

Everyone feels bad at some point in life. Everyone suffers from some kind of problem or the other. People have struggles and sometimes, things just don’t work the way we expect them to or the way we want them to work. The feeling of emptiness, despair, and sadness becomes so intense that it makes us captives. That is depression. The feeling just doesn’t go away.

Here are some symptoms to look out for if you feel you have a problem:

  • If you constantly feel sad
  • If you get mood swings with bad reactions
  • If you cannot eat food
  • If you cannot sleep
  • If you cannot work
  • If you cannot have fun
  • If you constantly find yourself remembering setbacks, struggles, and disappointments in life,
  • If you feel worthless and hopeless
  • If you do not find relief in anything

If you have any or all of these symptoms, then you have depression!

However, there are some things that you can do to help yourself get better without visiting a doctor. Here are some helpful tips by David Richards, a professor at the University of Exeter, working at the Mental Health Services Research department.

Self-help Tips to Fight Depression

Here are some things you can do to help yourself get back on track.

Don’t Isolate Yourself

Do not withdraw yourself from society. Socialize as much as you can because it helps you improve your mood. Stay in touch with family and friends, so that you have something to talk about and people to talk to and distract yourself.

Be Proactive

Take part in activities that keep you involved. Go for exercises, join a gym, or simply go for a 20-minutes’ walk every day. You can learn some exercises for depression too.

Face your Fears

You don’t have to avoid things that disturb you, or that you find difficult. When people feel anxious, they feel that avoiding the problem is the solution, but it really isn’t. For example, if you lose confidence with driving, stopping it will not help. Instead, face your fears and learn how to drive better.

Do not take Narcotics/Sleeping Pills/Alcohol

Addiction to drugs that temporarily cause numbness or relief from depression is a very scary problem. It causes resistance to the drugs and makes the person dependent on these things. They don’t solve the problem but can even make you feel more depressed with continuous use.

Eat a Healthy Diet

Some people just don’t find the appetite to eat when they are depressed. This increases their risk of becoming underweight, which leads to other health issues. On the other hand, some people overeat and suffer from overweight, and obesity induced health issues.

Make a Routine and Follow It

Depressed people often sleep less, have erotic sleep patterns, and sleep through the day. You must try to wake up in time, create a routine, and stick with it, as much as you can.

Find Your Happiness

You must build up your self-esteem and make yourself feel happy. No one will come and offer happiness to you; you have to find it yourself. Do things that bring humor back into your life like, watch comedy shows, movies, read books, and meet people. Help others with their problems to find peace and to get busy. Get enough sleep and talk to more people. Share your pain and find meaning in life by listening to the experiences of others.

Speak to Your GP

Lastly, if you’ve tried all this, and you still feel depressed after several weeks, consult your GP. Depression is not worth harming yourself, and if you find yourself compelled to do so, it means it is time to get serious help. You can take therapies, antidepressants, and get personal help from a psychologist to treat this condition.
