The World’s First Website Ever Created Turned 25

Thinking about anything other than the modern life that we all live today seems almost impossible. Without the World Wide Web, most of the humanity would probably just die of boredom, and we would just not be as sophisticated as we are today. 6 August was a special day because twenty-five years ago, on this very day, the first website ever created went live, online. After all this time, it remains active and thriving.

Creator of the World’s First Website

Its creator is Sir Tim Berners-Lee, and he created it in 1991, using the NEXT computer. Initially, in 1989, the idea about the World Wide Web was to use it to create a global system comprising of hypertexts. Moreover, on 6 August 1990, Berners-Lee posted the first description of this online. However, let me say that the website is not what you’d expect from a website today, but its appearance was not out of the ordinary for the 1990s. At that time, websites were mostly about having links.

Berners-Lee Did Much More

In 1993, the first web server, which was outside of Europe launched – CERN. It released the source code for public access. Until today, the computer where the code developed for the first time remains at CERN.

Apart from this, Berners-Lee worked on making the world’s first web browser ever. He also worked on other mechanisms, which included the HTML, HTTP, and URLs. All these developments effectively shaped the internet. He did not stop there, and he devoted as much time as possible protecting the browser, making sure it is available free and easily accessible.

In an interview, he said, “I feel a certain amount of inventor’s pride. My greatest pride has been the spirit of collaboration we’ve had for the last 25 years.”

Other Facts worth Mentioning

Here are some important facts I’d like to mention:

  • In 1980, Tim Berners-Lee had proposed a project, which became the web. However, no one bought his idea, and he decided to work in himself and then wrote a detailed proposal for the creation of the web in March 1989. He wrote another proposal in November 1990, with the assistance of Robert Cailliau. This proposal came through and was reliant upon a “Hypertext” system. He wanted all pages to be editable by users, so that authorship of the pages would be universal. He wanted everyone to contribute his or her knowledge.
  • This system was unique because it was the marriage between hypertexts and the internet. There were direct links that did not need any action by the owner of the destination pages, unlike the bi-directional hypertext system that exists today.
  • The first ever-created domain was Symbolics.com, on 15 March 1985. The owner of this domain was Symbolics Computer Corp. Today there are as many as 200 million domains registered, almost half of which are with the “.com” extension. Moreover, there are 110 million websites available with more than 1 trillion unique URLs, confirmed by the Google Search team.
  • In 1996, Apple purchased NeXT for 429 million dollars using the OpenStep OS as its foundation for the OSX.
  • Moreover, 1990 was not just the year when the world’s first website went online, but also a year when the world witnessed the Hubble Space Telescope launch into the orbit with the help of the space shuttle Discovery.
