A few days ago, I read a very interesting blog on Psychology Today, titled “Is Technology Making Us Stupid, (and Smarter)?” The truth is, it works both ways depending on how people use technology. Some people depend on it so much that it is making them dumb. On the other hand, some people use it to live smarter and better than before. It’s all about the choices you make with technology.
What Could Be Wrong with Your Depending on Technology
Let me cite an example for you. If you depend on a calculator for even the simplest of mathematical calculations, a time will come when you won’t be able to tell what seven multiplied by seven is. Likewise, if you depend on autocomplete or saved passwords on your browser, over time, your mind will slow down and fail to retain such important information. Search engines help us find information easily, but depending on online data will make you slower in an actual library where people use books. Many people rely on emails and digital files for everyday business. When they have to sign a document or write something, they don’t remember the right spelling or their signature. Things could be that bad for you if you depend on technology too much.
How to Use Technology the Smart Way
I grew up hearing my parents say that there are limits to everything. This is something about which the present generations are ignorant. Older people use technology and are adapting to new gadgets, but at the same time, they maintain a balance in their lives. Smart people use machinery only where they need it and use their natural gifts otherwise.
3 Tech Mistakes People Make
Apart from depending on technology for convenience, people ignore the fact that every piece comes with a unique user guide. There are numerous smartphones out there and they each have different features. Never buy any smartphone without checking their specifications. Try to understand the memory space, the speed of the device, the pixels of the camera, and then judge the worth of the device. Likewise, when you shop for a microwave, television, laptop, read the specifications and understand the user guide. If you have doubts or feel unsatisfied by the details you get, then consult others or simply move on and keep looking until you find something that suits you.
Another mistake many people make is going with the trend. Sometimes, people go for branded things without paying attention to the quality and value they offer. In the case of electronics, I would never recommend chasing brand names. Make sure there is a warranty period and make sure that the device works for you! Do not fall prey to the marketing strategies and lies people advertise for their business.
Sometimes, people just do things to be “cool.” Buying a cool phone to be part of the society and for impressing people is also a mistake. Never do things because it is the latest trend. Here’s a video that caught my attention and I want to share it with you.
Final Words
Here’s something you need to keep in mind. Never buy machinery that you do not use frequently. When you let machinery lie without using it, it will spoil eventually. I always tell my friends that as parents and elders, we are going to be the guide our kids follow. If we live life sensibly, we will teach our kids the same. To raise smart and intelligent kids and to age gracefully, we all need to use technology wisely. I’d like to know your thoughts on this, so leave your comments below!
