4 Common HVAC System Issues and How to Spot Them

Like all systems in a house, heating, ventilation, and air conditioning system can break down. Your HVAC system requires regular maintenance to stop serious problems from developing. However, despite your best efforts, you may still end up noticing issues that should be addressed. Below are four common examples you should look out for and how to spot them.

Dirty Air Filters

One maintenance task that absolutely must be completed on a regular basis is the replacement of air filters. If you don’t replace them often enough, they can become clogged with dirt and debris. Not doing so can cause your HVAC system to underperform. This can greatly increase the cost of running your system. It can also deplete the air quality in your home, which would be bad for your family’s health. Check to see if your filters are clean or dirty on a regular basis.

Low Refrigerant

Another telltale sign of serious HVAC issues is if the cooling by your air conditioner feels very uneven in your house. In fact, you may feel new air circulating in your house, but it may not feel cool at all. Often, the problem can be sourced back to low refrigerant. If you perform diagnostics on your air conditioner, it should detect low refrigerant. This most often indicates a leak that should be fixed.

Ignition Failure in HVAC System

Another common problem occurs when the furnace fails to start working at all after the thermostat has been told to turn on the heat. This problem will be obvious to you when you experience it. The furnace simply won’t kick on. Usually, this indicates some component in your furnace should be replaced. This could be the pilot light, the igniter, or another electrical component.

Coil Problems

Many HVAC systems implement coils that play a big part in the operation of the system. Something you should add to your HVAC checklist is examining these coils. Look for signs of corrosion. If they look as though they are ready to break, you may need to bring in an expert to make a repair. Coils can also get dirty over time and cause the failure of your air conditioning. They need to be cleaned from time to time.

Create a maintenance checklist. Performing routine maintenance on your HVAC system can improve its performance and lengthen its lifespan. However, if you spot serious problems, don’t be afraid to call in professionals to perform furnace or air conditioning repair. These systems can be complex and require training and expert knowledge to resolve.
