Lanterns Finale: Episode 8 Ending Explained & Season 2

The Lanterns finale has arrived, and HBO’s ambitious DC series has ended its first season with a surprisingly emotional conclusion rather than relying on a massive superhero battle. After eight episodes of mystery, suspicion, and tension between Hal Jordan and John Stewart, Lanterns Episode 8 finally answers one of the season’s biggest questions: who killed Hal Jordan?

Starring Kyle Chandler as Hal Jordan and Aaron Pierre as John Stewart, the HBO series has taken a grounded approach to the Green Lantern mythology. That decision becomes particularly important in the season finale, “Dirt and Stars,” which focuses more on character choices and consequences than spectacle.

What Happens in the Lanterns Finale?

Spoiler warning: Major ending details follow.

The Lanterns season finale reveals that Sheriff Kerry Kane was responsible for Hal Jordan’s death. Hal had discovered the truth about Kerry’s son Noah and confronted the situation, leading to a tragic confrontation. Noah later takes responsibility for Hal’s death, attempting to protect his mother.

The revelation also connects the season’s murder mystery to the larger Manhunter storyline. Noah is revealed to be a Manhunter, making Hal’s discovery of the truth much more dangerous than it initially appeared.

However, the biggest development belongs to John Stewart.

Throughout the season, John has struggled with the expectations surrounding becoming a Green Lantern. In the finale, he finally embraces the power ring on his own terms. Aaron Pierre’s character ultimately becomes Earth’s Green Lantern, marking the completion of the journey that began when he first encountered Hal.

Rather than simply copying the traditional Green Lantern mythology, John creates his own path. His final choice emphasizes one of the show’s central ideas: courage does not mean eliminating fear; it means deciding what to do despite it.

Kyle Chandler’s Hal Jordan Gets an Emotional Goodbye

For fans of Kyle Chandler, the finale is especially significant because it confirms that Hal Jordan’s death was not simply a temporary fake-out.

There had been plenty of speculation that Hal might return, particularly because the story introduced unusual possibilities involving his past and the Halogram. However, the creators have indicated that they wanted the consequences of Hal’s death to feel real rather than undoing the emotional impact with a last-minute resurrection.

That gives Hal’s final scenes with John much greater weight. Their relationship began with friction, but by the end, Hal effectively passes the responsibility to the next generation.

What Time Does Lanterns Come Out on HBO Max?

For viewers following the release schedule, Lanterns Episode 8 premiered in the United States on Sunday, October 4, at 9 p.m. ET / 6 p.m. PT on HBO and HBO Max. The UK received the finale in the early hours of October 5, while India received it at 6:30 a.m. IST.

All eight episodes make up the first season, with the finale officially serving as the Lanterns season finale.

Will There Be Lanterns Season 2?

This is where things remain uncertain.

Although the ending clearly leaves room for more stories, Lanterns Season 2 has not been officially renewed. The finale establishes John Stewart as an important new Green Lantern while leaving several possibilities open for the wider DC Universe.

For now, fans will have to wait and see whether HBO and DC Studios bring the series back. What is certain is that Aaron Pierre’s John Stewart now has a much larger role to play in the developing DC Universe.

The Lanterns finale may have closed the first chapter, but it certainly did not make the Green Lantern story feel finished.
