Have you heard about the 20-20-20 rule for the eyes? I’m guessing not! Not many people know about it because it is something people rarely talk about, even doctors. I learned about it some time ago writing for a company about its policies.
Some European countries including the U.S. and Canada implement this rule to look out for peoples’ eye health. Workers are supposed to comply with this rule because companies want their workforce to prevent eyestrain. The idea here is to work for 20 minutes, and then look at something 20 feet away for 20 seconds.
Why is the 20-20-20 Rule Important?
Your computer screen looks bright, and you probably don’t blink so much while working. At least you don’t blink as often as you should. Then, if your job is a desk job where you spend up to nine hours staring at the computer screen, imagine the damage it causes. Your eyes will become dry sometimes and may even have redness.
The 20-20-20 rule helps you deal with these problems. Every computer user should take a break after every 20 minutes to look at any object 20 feet away. Because it is almost impossible for computer handlers to remember to take the break at every twenty minutes, there are apps available to remind them.
Examples of 20-20-20 Apps
When you install these apps, they sit on the system tray and pop up at every 20 minutes to make sure that you take the 20 second’s break.
You have to follow the pointer on the popup to relax your eyes. Sometimes the app says roll your eyes, at other times it asks you close them tight, and at times, it says stare at something 20 feet away. Just go with it. My personal favorite is Eye Leo. It is small, handy, and keeps things interesting, making it fun to work towards avoiding eyestrain. It also recommends getting up and walking around or exercising for four minutes at different times.
You may also like Work rave, which offers two forms of micro-breaks to make sure that you comply with the 20-20-20 rule. I one, you have to take a short walk, and in another, you just relax your eyes. It has an inbuilt wizard that gives you quick stretch instructions that you can do during the break.
Who Needs the 20-20-20 Rule
If you are someone who works for several hours on a computer or stares at the cell phone for too long, then installing these apps will be a very good idea. Besides, if you’ve spent too long reading this article, then take a break and download one of these apps now. If you already have eye problem due to the computer, then you can get relief from eye strain by taking some simple measures.
